INFRARED SAUNAS VS. TRADITIONAL SAUNAS

Infrared heat therapy from an Infrared Sauna is a gentle, soothing and therapeutic heat, UNLIKE traditional saunas which:

  • Heat the air with steam

  • Can be unbearably hot

  • Cause you to only sweat at the surface of the tissue

  • May make the air difficult to breathe from steam

Infrared Saunas may be referred to as “dry saunas” because they do not just heat the air, like a steam room, but rather Infrared light heats the body directly, heating it from within, which causes a deep, detoxifying sweat without having the uncomfortable heat and difficulty breathing of a steam room.

Infrared Saunas heat the body with Infrared light, creating an atmosphere of 120-158°F and raising your core temperature 2-3 degrees. Traditional saunas heat the air temperature to 180°F or above, creating a less sustainable, less comfortable environment to sit in, compared to the Infrared Sauna’s gentle warmth which penetrates deeply to release toxins, relax soft tissue and improve full-body circulation using gentle and soothing heat to offer an invigorating deep-tissue sweat.

Sweating is excellent for cleansing your body and helps you to heal and stay healthy. Because an Infrared Sauna offers a deep and detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside, it also helps to prevent infection.

Studies testing and comparing the sweat expelled in Infrared and traditional saunas have shown that Infrared is at least SEVEN times more effective at expelling toxins, with a total of 20% of all sweat being heavy metals and environmental toxins.

Scientific research has also concluded that Near-Infrared therapy greatly improves the skin’s healing process by promoting faster cell regeneration and human tissue growth: this offers a natural anti-aging benefit since it helps to stimulate collagen production, which in turn reduces wrinkles and overall skin tone.

Infrared Sauna sessions may also promote relaxation and improved sleep.

INFRARED LIGHT EXPLAINED

Infrared light is the part of the invisible spectrum of light that has the ability to penetrate the human tissue - this natural radiant heat from the sun happens to be the same wavelength of light used to warm premature babies! Unlike sunbathing, Infrared heat therapy is completely healthy and safe - you can relax in an Infrared Sauna for hours and it will never cause your skin to burn.

Almost all Infrared Saunas only use Far-Infrared wavelengths, whereas East Coast Float Spa features Sunlighten® brand, the leader in Infrared Saunas and the only manufacturer using patented Solocarbon™ full-spectrum (all parts of the Infrared wavelength: Near-Infrared, Mid-Infrared, & Far-Infrared) Infrared heating technology to deliver a consistent and gentle Infrared heat throughout each session.

SEVEN TIMES MORE DETOXIFYING

Our Infrared Sauna heats the body directly, instead of the surrounding air like a traditional sauna, causing a rise in core temperature. This results in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside; studies have shown it is seven times more detoxifying than a regular sauna!

INFRARED SAUNA BENEFITS

Pain Relief

Infrared Sauna heat therapy works by penetrating tissue, joints and muscles to relieve anything from minor aches and pains to chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia. Pain management professionals incorporate Infrared Sauna heat therapy into treatment plans to decrease pain and muscle spasms and to speed up recovery time. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, Infrared heat reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally.

For years, doctors have recommended Infrared Sauna heat therapy because of proven pain relief to tissue, joints, and muscles from sports injuries, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis and other chronic pain conditions.

Pain Relief Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna two times per week for six weeks.

Detoxification

Sweating is good for you. It is the body’s safe and natural way to heal and stay healthy. Detoxification happens by heating the body directly, causing a rise in core temperature. This results in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside

Many toxins take up residence in our fat cells, liver, and brain tissue. The body’s most natural form of detox is to sweat. But surface sweat, and deep sweat are different. The Infrared Sauna is specifically designed to promote a deep, healthy and natural detoxifying sweat. The sweat produced while detoxing with an Infrared Sauna has been tested to show 20% toxins vs. the sweat tested from traditional sauna use at only 3% - almost SEVEN TIMES more detoxifying power with an Infrared Sauna compared to a typical sauna, to much more effectively uproot these toxins.

Detoxification Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna two to three times per week.

Weight Loss

Studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association have shown that an Infrared Sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories, all while you relax! During an Infrared Sauna session, your body’s core temperature increases, and then as the body works to cool itself, there is a substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories, leading to more weight loss.

Weight Loss Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna three times per week for eight to twelve weeks

Blood Pressure/Circulation (Cardiovascular)

The Infrared Sauna induces a deep sweat to make the heart pump faster, which in turn increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and helps circulation. Scientific evidence shows using an Infrared Sauna a couple of times a week lowers blood pressure.

In fact, East Coast Float Spa features a state-of-the-art Sunlighten® Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna, the ONLY Infrared Sauna backed by clinical research showing a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure with regular use.

Heating the muscles with Near-Infrared stimulates the circulatory system and produces an increase in blood flow similar to that seen during exercise. Regular Infrared Sauna use, especially in the Mid-Infrared wavelength range, can significantly stimulate blood flow up to twice the normal rate (increasing from about 5-7 quarts up to about 13 quarts a minute).

Near-Infrared increases circulation and speeds oxygen flow to more fully oxygenate the body’s cells. Better blood circulation means more toxins flow from the cellular level to the skin’s surface to improve cell health and aid in muscle recovery.

Cardiovascular Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna two to three times per week for four weeks.

Natural Skin Anti-Aging

The Near-Infrared wavelengths are the most effective wavelengths for healing the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Near-Infrared stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone. Far-Infrared wavelengths target deeper down, removing toxins that can have a negative impact on your skin.

A study published in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy showed significant improvements in skin appearance after just 12 weeks of Infrared Sauna skin therapy using Near-Infrared. Participants experienced a reduction in wrinkles and crow’s feet, as well as improved overall skin tone, including softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness.

An Infrared Sauna’s skin therapy program can help restore your skin to a youthful appearance, letting you rejuvenate your skin while also receiving all of the other health benefits associated with Infrared Sauna therapy. In fact, East Coast Float Spa’s Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna from Sunlighten® uses its patented Solocarbon 3-in-1® technology, which is the only Infrared Sauna heater on the market with Near-Infrared light! It even comes with an anti-aging program designed from this study!

Skin Rejuvenation Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna three times per week for twelve weeks.

Immune System

Regular use of an Infrared Sauna may strengthen the immune system by naturally boosting your levels of Vitamin D. Far-Infrared wavelengths strengthen immunity by stimulating increased production of white blood cells (leukocytes) by the bone marrow and killer T-cells by the thymus; this has been proven to increase the body’s ability to fight off bacteria, colds, flus, and other ailments.

An Infrared Sauna also helps strengthen your immunity by creating an artificial fever. Fever is a natural healing response of the body. The function of the immune system is increased naturally during a fever, while viral and bacterial growth is slowed, weakening its hold. This helps the body ward off invading organisms. An Infrared Sauna heat therapy treatment in the early stages of a cold or flu has been known to stop the disease before the symptoms occur!

Immune System Strengthening Therapeutic Protocol Recommendation: Use the Infrared Sauna two to three times per week on an ongoing basis.

Infrared Sauna FAQ

A friendly and knowledgeable Team Member will get you checked in and then guide you to your private Infrared Sauna room. For your first Infrared Sauna session, please plan on arriving 15 minutes early for check in and to receive an orientation.

Your Infrared Sauna session is scheduled for either up to 30 minutes or up to 60 minutes, depending on your preference when booking. Some guests prefer shorter sessions closer to only 30-45 minutes; however, the room itself is booked to accommodate your full session, along with time before and after to get changed, hydrate, and cool off a little before departing.

The Infrared Sauna will typically be pre-heated to about 140-160°F (the maximum temperature); please inform us in advance of your session if you prefer a different setting. The Infrared Sauna features soft colored lights and calming meditation music to let you sweat deeply, enjoy quiet and relaxation, and leave feeling refreshed and energized!

Please bring the necessary attire for the Infrared Sauna: we recommend a bathing suit, gym shorts, or other comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. If you will be using other services besides the Infrared Sauna with your visit, you may want to bring a duffel bag for your clothes and belongings for ease in carrying across the various areas of the Spa. Additionally, we recommend NOT to apply lotion or oil to your body before your Infrared Sauna session. Towels are provided, one to sit on and one with which to wear and/or dry off. Some guests choose to wear the towel, a bathing suit, or their undergarments in the Infrared Sauna. If you will be Floating AFTER your Infrared Sauna session, we also provide a robe and shower. Please note that if you are NOT Floating after using the Infrared Sauna, a shower will NOT be included. You are welcome to bring a book to take inside the Infrared Sauna to read, but we recommend NOT to bring any personal phones or other electronic devices (including smartwatches) into the Infrared Sauna. While you can bring a device in, it may overheat and not function or charge properly until returned to a normal temperature, and, while minimal, risk exists of damaging your device by exposing it to the high temperatures of the Infrared Sauna. Complimentary Spa water is provided, but there is a strict no bottles, drinks, or food policy within the Infrared Sauna, so you’ll want to ensure you hydrate fully both before and after.

How much you sweat depends on your individual body: sweat produced from Infrared is usually oilier and less watery than other sweating experiences. This is due to the high concentration of toxins in the sweat you’re expelling. While it may not be intuitive, guests should be aware that you may not sweat that much in your first few sessions, and that it is essential to stay hydrated (drinking at least 8 ounces of water before and after your session).

The majority of our guests who use the Infrared Sauna regularly to fully experience its benefits schedule sessions at least three times a week (which is also what scientific studies support). Additional specific therapeutic protocol recommendations depending on the reason for which an individual is using Infrared heat therapy (i.e. pain relief, weight loss, etc.) may recommend an even more frequent regiment. Immediately after an Infrared Sauna session you may feel refreshed and see a glow in your skin, similar to after a great workout. It also may take a few sessions before the body acclimates and begins to deeply detox and see all the benefits related to Infrared light therapy.

Unfortunately, you must be 18 years of age and older. Children under 18 years old may use the Infrared Sauna with a parent/guardian at no additional cost, but cannot use it alone.

While using an Infrared Sauna is generally safe for most people, there are certain medical conditions and medications which may have contraindications for using an Infrared Sauna and present reasons why an individual should NOT use the Infrared Sauna at East Coast Float Spa. Please review our Infrared Sauna Waiver (click here) for additional details of potential medical conditions and medications which should potentially prevent the safe usage of our Infrared Sauna.

Pregnant women are not advised to use the Infrared Sauna. Increasing body temperature above 100 degrees can increase risk of complications in pregnant women. Studies have shown that Far-Infrared rays have been shown to be a safe and effective way to increase lactation in breastfeeding mothers; however, we ask all individuals who may be pregnant and/or breastfeeding to please consult with your doctor, physician, midwife, or other health professional.

Yes, our Infrared Sauna is a three-person sized unit in order to give our guests a comfortable experience. Although we recommend only one- or two-person Infrared Sauna sessions, you may reserve the Infrared Sauna session with a significant other or friend, up to three total people. Additional guests may save $10 (per person), or may join free if part of an active Sauna Club Membership.

Sessions are offered either up to 30 minutes OR up to 60 minutes in length, and you have the Sauna room itself reserved privately. There is generally no rush, and we allow for time for getting dressed, refreshed and hydrated so you may enjoy up to the entire duration of your session inside the Infrared Sauna if you’d like!

If you wish to cancel or reschedule your session, we require 24 hours notice before your booked appointment. Sessions cancelled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours (or no-shows) will be charged for the full session and/or assessed a flat fee.
